The Challenge

What they needed

The team wanted one app to replace three separate habits — planning a trip, sharing it, and booking the pieces — without making any of them feel bolted on. The hardest part was offline maps: travelers need full itinerary and map access in places with spotty or no connectivity, which meant caching Mapbox tiles and trip data locally without bloating the app or draining battery. Layered on top was a live social feed that had to stay fast and current as usage grew. Bookings added a third constraint: payments needed to run reliably through Stripe alongside real-time map and social data, all inside a single React Native codebase shipping to iOS and Android at once. Getting trip planning, social, and commerce to feel like one product instead of three separate tools was the core design problem.

Our Solution

What we built

We built the app as a single React Native codebase so the team could ship to iOS and Android from one codebase instead of maintaining two. A Node.js backend with MongoDB stores itineraries, social posts, and user data in flexible schemas that could evolve as features shipped. For maps, we integrated Mapbox with a custom caching layer so travelers can pull up full itineraries and navigation offline, a core requirement given the app's international, on-the-road audience. On top of that we added AI-driven trip suggestions and a social feed where travelers share itineraries and experiences with each other. Stripe handles booking payments for local experiences directly in-app, tying planning, social discovery, and commerce into one flow.

Key Decisions

How we approached it

01

Chose React Native over separate native codebases to ship iOS and Android simultaneously and keep one team maintaining one release cycle.

02

Built a custom Mapbox tile-caching layer so itineraries and maps stay usable offline, the make-or-break feature for a travel app used mid-trip.

03

Used MongoDB's flexible schema to let itinerary, social post, and booking data models evolve independently as the product grew past initial launch.

04

Integrated Stripe directly into the booking flow so users pay for local experiences without leaving the itinerary or social feed.
