How Much Does It Cost to Build a Mobile App in 2026?

How much does a mobile app actually cost in 2026?

The honest answer: between $15,000 and $300,000+. The honest follow-up: that range is so wide because the question is missing about ten variables.

Below is the same cost framework we walk every prospect through, with real 2026 numbers.

The four cost drivers

App cost is mostly a function of four things. Everything else is rounding error.

1. Scope (the feature list). A delivery app with chat, payments, real-time tracking, and an admin dashboard is roughly 6x the work of a content-only app with the same number of screens. The screen count tells you almost nothing.

2. Backend complexity. No backend? Cheap. Firebase + a few cloud functions? Mid-range. Custom Node/Go backend with payments, multi-tenancy, role-based access, and webhooks? That alone can cost $25k–$60k.

3. Platform. iOS-only ships fastest. iOS + Android via React Native or Flutter typically adds 25–35% over a single platform — not 100%, because most code is shared. Two fully native codebases (Swift + Kotlin) is closer to 1.7x.

4. Polish level. A "looks fine" app and a "this feels like a $50M company built it" app share zero animation work. Custom motion, haptics, micro-interactions, dark mode, accessibility — each adds 10–20% to the design-and-engineering bill.

Realistic 2026 ranges

These are total project costs (design + iOS + Android + backend + QA + one round of post-launch fixes), not hourly rates.

  • MVP, single platform, no backend — $15,000–$25,000. 4–6 weeks. Examples: a habit tracker, a simple booking form, an event companion app.
  • Production MVP, both platforms, light backend — $35,000–$70,000. 8–12 weeks. Examples: a niche marketplace, a fitness app with subscriptions, a B2B field-service tool.
  • Full product, both platforms, custom backend, integrations — $80,000–$180,000. 4–6 months. Examples: a delivery app, a fintech wallet, a multi-vendor commerce app.
  • Enterprise / regulated — $200,000–$500,000+. 6–12 months. Examples: telemedicine, banking, insurance, anything that has to pass a SOC 2 or HIPAA audit before launch.

Where most budgets get burned

In our post-mortems, three line items eat the most money — and none of them are "design" or "engineering":

  1. Scope creep after week 4. Founders see the prototype, get excited, and bolt on features. Every "small" addition costs 1.5x what it would have cost in the original plan because the architecture wasn't designed for it.
  2. Apple/Google review cycles. Plan for 2–3 rejections on the first submission. Each one can stall a release by a week.
  3. Third-party integrations. Stripe, Twilio, payment gateways in non-US markets, KYC providers — these are easy to underestimate. We budget 1.5x the vendor's quoted integration time, every time.

The MVP-first argument

If you're choosing between "build everything" and "build the smallest version that proves the idea," pick the small version. We've watched founders spend $150k on a v1 with 30 features, then learn after launch that users only care about 4 of them. The same $150k could have funded an MVP, a real launch, and a v2 grounded in user data.

Practical rule: if you can't write your app's core promise in one sentence, you're not ready to build it yet.

What an estimate actually needs

Before any agency can give you a number that isn't fiction, they need:

  • A feature list, ranked must-have vs nice-to-have
  • Sample screens or a competitor app you want to feel like
  • Your platform requirements (one OS or both)
  • Your launch deadline and budget ceiling
  • Whether you have an existing backend or are starting from zero

If a studio quotes you in under 48 hours without asking these questions, the quote is wrong — usually low, occasionally high, never accurate.

Use our project estimator for a same-day ballpark, or send us a one-paragraph brief and we'll come back with a real number within two business days. If you'd rather talk specifics first, our mobile app development team can walk through your scope directly.
